(Belated) Music Monday: My Inner Girl Rocker Playlist

Ever since I could remember, I’ve always lived a very exciting and eventful life, filled with love triangles, adventures that span continents and dramatic scenes that are worthy of screen time.

Oh right, that was all in my head

But really, ever since I could fully grasp the idea of make-believe and reality (and even before that probably), I’ve always created stories in my head, stories that kept me company on my long bus trip daily commutes, while waiting in line at school/banks/government agencies, waiting to fall asleep and yes, while sitting on the john.

One of my favorite “storylines” in all these made-up stories is a girl, usually played by Katie Holmes or Julia Stiles or Britt Robertson (Life Unexpected girl) who is a shy, unassuming girl but possesses an outstanding voice that is discovered by the whole world when she is suddenly thrust onto the stage and delivers an unforgettable rocking performance and then slowly becomes the poster girl for girrrrl rockers.

It doesn’t take a psychology degree to conclude that I am a frustrated rocker. It’s been my ultimate dream to play the guitar and sing at the same time. But given my severe lack of hand-eye-voice coordination as evidenced by my dismal back-up guitar and vocals performance of Lovely Day, I would have to live vicariously through the fictional characters in my head.

Which brings us to the Top 7 songs my inner girl rocker performs in my head. And yes, these storylines will not win any Oscars

1. Mother Mother by Tracy Bonham

Storyline: Girl who leaves home to pursue her dream coz her parents dont understand why she wants to become a professional singer, but gives up on dream until she gets accidentally discovered

2. Let This Go by Paramore

Storyline: Girl gets her heart broken over and over by the douchebag jock until she finally breaks up with him through this song and guy realizes what a douchebag he really is

3. Bitch by Plasticines

Storyline: Girl gets back at mean girls by singing this song at the school talent show

4. Taken by Plumb

Storyline: Girl meets boy. Girls falls in love with boy. Boy dies in a horrible accident. Girl performs song at boy’s funeral

5. These Boots Are Made for Walking by Nancy Sinatra or One Way or Another by Blondie

Storyline: Karaoke scene in whatever story is in my head

6.  Someone to Fall Back On by Alyson Michalka

Storyline: The quiet girl who can write songs but never had the guts to sing on stage until that now or never moment

7. Volcano Girls by Veruca Salt

Storyline: Everyone thinks she’s a sweet, harmless, boring little girl until she takes the stage and blasts everyone away with this ong

8. Violet by Hole

Storyline: Goody goody two shoes who rebels against her straight laced parents by singing songs like this

9. Addicted to Love cover by Florence and the Machine

Storyline: Trying to catch the attention and interest of her indie-rocker crush by doing an indie-sultry version of this Robert Palmer classic

10. Only Happy When It Rains by Garbage

Storyline: No storyline, I just love imagining my character singing her heart out to this song

So what is your inner girl rocker playlist

100 Things I Love Project: #1 – Performing Songs and Stories in My Head

(DISCLAIMER: This post isnt about schizophrenia or any mental defect as the title might suggest)

Commuting is one of the necessary evils that plague us who have no cars/drivers/money for cabs. Whether it’s in a hot/humid/wet jeepney, a sardine-packed MRT or the long torturous bus ride through EDSA/NLEX/SLEX

And anyone who does this everyday nods their head vigorously.

But aside from the constant irritants (loud and/or smelly people, berzerk drivers, horrendous-its-not-funny-anymore traffic), one of the things that I absolutely dread is the inevitable boredom that comes while I’m on the road. I can only look at billboards for so long, and I get nauseated if I even dare to read. And don’t get me started on the choice of music/tv shows/movies of bus drivers

That is why I sincerely thank whoever invented portable music, because you probably saved my sanity (or whatever is left of it). Yes, I owned a discman and a walkman at one time or another (for those of you too young to remember, a discman is a circle-shaped thing that played CDs and a walkman is a rectangular box that played radio and cassette tapes)

And how do I even begin to thank Apple for giving us ipods? Anyhooo….

I’ve gotten to the point when even just listening to music is not enough. So I came up with this “game” where each song has a 4 minute short story attached to it.

A Paramore song is the first song a shy, young girl ever performs in public and she rocks it out to her heart’s content while the boy who payed no attention to her suddenly sees her in a different light

A Switchfoot song is the soundtrack to a guy walking around the city, with existential thoughts drifting through his mind, until there is a sudden downpour and the camera cinematically pans out

A Broken Social Scene song is being played by the DJ in a party and everyone is dancing and drinking and laughing, while a wallflower is slinking on the sides

A Damien Rice song is being written by a “bad boy” type who is trying to suppress his “sensitive side” but it comes out in the songs that he writes

A The Strokes song is being played in a seedy bar by a cover band that can’t seem to break into the big leagues

And it goes on and on and on

Doing this combines two things that I love: good music and making up stories in my head. It gets me out of having to be irritated with my seatmate who is loudly taking advantage of unli calls  or the fact that the vehicle hasn’t moved in 10 minutes as if we’re in a parking lot.

Try it sometime and extend your life a few more hours just because you didn’t give in to the stress of commuting

Top 10 Things I’m Looking Forward to in 2010

Okay, I know it’s a month too late to be making Top 10 lists, but hey, I still have 11 months to go anyways

1. Challenges and Difficulties ahead in my new job – 3 days into my new job and I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. But for some reason, I’m looking forward to it because I feel like I’ve been stagnant for soooo long and it’s time for me to get off my butt and challenge myself. Now if only I can wake up early in the morning…

2. Weddings – 3 really good friends are getting married this year (i need not name names, you know who you are) and while I’m not marriage’s biggest fan (well, at least for myself) I am so excited for them because weddings are always fun and at least it’s proof that love still works for some

3. Upcoming movies – call me “mababaw”, but the anticipation for these movies is something i so look forward to. Percy Jackson, Clash of the Titans, Harry Potter, Alice in Wonderland, The Last Airbender (aka the real Avatar), Toy Story 3. The list goes on and on and on

4. Concerts and Gigs – although it will make a dent in my pocket, having some of my foreign acts come here is something I don’t want to miss. Kris Allen and Paramore are the only ones confirmed so far, but I’m sure there will be more. And gigs, gosh I miss gigs: Taken by Cars, Techy Romantics, Sino Sikat, Urbandub, Up Dharma Down, Cynthia Alexander

5. Going Back

“And the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time” – T.S Elliot

6. Stepping Out of the Country – I’ve been making this promise to myself for five years now, and five years I’ve failed myself. Let’s try again this year okay? Now about that passport…..

7. Meeting New People – while I dearly love the friends that I have right now, I still feel like my world is too small. I’ve just been always too “shy” and, well to be honest, tamad, to go out and socialize and explore. But I am now “forced” to do so coz my new job requires me to, so I have no choice. Who knows, I might learn something along the way

8. Stepping Out of Myself – i think it’s about time i do something about all the injustices in this world. So I’m gonna put on my superhero costume and fight crime and….okay, so of course I can’t do that, but I can take small steps by volunteering and doing something, not just rant about it

9. Moving – I hate the overcrowded MRT, the never ending parking lot of EDSA and the mad dash to get to Makati from QC. So apartment hunting is the first on my list of goals for 2010. I’m gonna miss my current pad terribly, but sacrifices have to  be made

10. Meeting Bono – dreaming is free. And if I do go to Ireland for someone’s 2nd wedding, I just might be a few miles closer to him
