Wish Wednesday: Birthday Wish List

Because I just couldn’t help making one….

and it doesn’t have to be an all-expense paid trip. Just someone to organize it, schedule it, gather all my friends together, plan the itinerary. Oh wait, that is almost always my job, so yeah, I would probably gift myself this

Football Collectibles/Paraphernalia

Anyone who knows me through my social networks know that is my new-found passion obsession and anything that has to do with my favorite teams (Azkals, Spanish National Team, German National Team, FC Barcelona, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspurs, Bolton Wanderers) or my favorite players (Fernando Torres, Kaka, Xavi, Xabi, David Villa, Jack Wilshere, Cesc Fabregas, Gareth Bale, Javier Hernandez) is most welcome. Whew

CDs of indie artists or/and artists that I haven’t heard of

I love discovering new music as much as I love organizing my iTunes. ‘Nuff said.

Sandman Vol 3 and up

I’ve finished reading the whole Sandman saga electronically, but now my dream is to actually have the whole collection, so I can relive the lives of The Endless and the people they encountered. Still my favorite graphic novel of all time

A girl can never have enough notebooks and ballpens and post-its

A day at the spa

My whole body has been begging me to go to a spa for the longest time. My schedule says “Soon…soon”. My pocket says “Well…..”

I am a week already into my two-week forced caffeine detox and my mind is going all kinds of crazy. So as soon as the two weeks are up, boy, am I gonna need some coffee loving

Macbook Pro / Ipod Touch 4th Gen / Ipad 2

What can I say, Steve Jobs has really done a number on me. I’m currently in the process of saving up for the first, and the other two are just dreams, not necessities. It really is nice to dream eh?

Top 10 Things I Fell in Love with (and re-loved) in 2010

1. God – I wasn’t really a heathen for the past years, but I did put Him in a box and set Him aside for a few years now, not because I didn’t believe in Him, but because of various reasons I made myself believe. But this year, after I set aside the “youthful and immature” emotions about God that I’ve accumulated over the years, and I started re-learning and learning new things about Him, then eventually falling in love all over again, but this time (hopefully) with a deeper and more mature sense of who He really is.

2. Football (that’s soccer to Americans and Filipinos) – Okay, I have to be honest and admit that I only started watching because of the hot men, but somewhere along the way, it stopped being about that (although I still ogle them, much to my guy footie friends consternation) and became about the sport that the rest of the world is crazy about. Good luck getting me out of the house on a Saturday night when the Premiere League games are on. And yes, my sleeping hours have been considerably lessened because of a stupid thing called time difference. And I’m ecstatic that a lot of Filipinos are starting to at least be interested in the sport coz of the Azkals.

3. Being home – ever since I was in college, I’ve lived away from home, except for weekends and the occasional bout of homesickness. But ever since I’ve made the decision to move back in with my Mom, brother and Lola, I’ve been excited to come home everyday, in spite of the traffic and the commuting hassle. As Dorothy said, “There’s no place like home”

4. DIY Scrapbooking – Out of boredom and joblessness, I started to make a few scrapbook pages, and all of a sudden, I was addicted to it, sometimes doing nothing else the whole day. But since scrapbooking materials are too expensive, I made do with recycling old planners, magazines, newspapers and postcards. It is nostalgic and therapeutic and I highly recommend it if you wanna let out your creative monster.

5. The Walking Dead. Arcade Fire. Inception. Deathly Hollows. Blue Bloods. Erwin McManus. Esperanza Spalding. Toy Story 3. Sherlock. Fernando Torres. Shutter Island. Black Keys. Xavi. Justified. Beach House. Donald Miller. FC Barcelona/Spain NT – I will be doing different posts on my favorite movies, TV shows, music, books, football teams/players. Pop Culture rocks!

6. Relevant Magazine – I keep raving and reposting stuff from their website and a lot of my new musical discoveries are courtesy of their recommendations. It still is my dream to put up something like this locally, and hopefully, it will come to fruition soon.

7. Early mornings with myself – I dunno if it’s coz I’m just getting older, but suddenly I’m evolving into a morning person (although I’m still a work in progress). The mornings where I find myself alone, sipping coffee, reading a book, physically writing, or just staring into space, are very precious to me.

8. OMF Literature – I can truly say that I love everything about my job, even the most difficult, tiring, painful parts. What the movement stands for, the books, the people, the devotions, the lunch break chikka minutes, the food, the coffee, the heart, the passion – these are just some of the things that I love. Probably, this is one of the best things that happened to me in 2010.

9. My techie combo of a notebook, blackberry, ipod touch and C3 – And no, I’m not boasting that I own all these things, but I really love the fact that they’ve made my professional and personal life all the more connected and fun, whether it’s updating my social networks, answering emails on the go, playing PvZ and Angry Birds, working and writing in a coffee shop, listening to music and podcasts.

10. The Wednesday Group – you know who you are so I won’t name names. You were the ones who didn’t give up on me even though I was lost. And now you are standing with me as we all together strengthen our faith. And the food every Wednesday ain’t bad either.

What (or who) did you fall in love with in 2010?

My Must List – week of July 26

It’s been more than a month since I last posted a Must List, so here goes

1. Summer TV shows

I don’t get attached too much with summer TV shows since they almost always become cannon fodder (meaning, canceled before they even had a chance). There are some interesting shows this year, notably Happy Town (think Twin Peaks), Persons Unknown (trying to be the next Lost), The Gates (vampires, werewolves, witches – all in one subdivision!), Haven (a more serious Eureka), Memphis Beat (a detective who moonlights as an Elvis-like singer), Scoundrels (a family of criminals trying to go straight) and my personal favorite, Covert Affairs, which has the potential to be the new, funnier Alias

2. ESPERANZA SPALDING!!!

And yes, I deliberately used all caps. It’s so stupid that I’ve only recently listened to her after several overly enthusiastic recommendations from different friends. But better late than never! Her voice lulls me to sleep every night. And I can’t stop watching videos of her live performances.

3. Good News About Injustice

I’ve always been a big fan of International Justice Mission, and because of my new job, I’ve had the chance to read the first few 10th anniversary edition of this amazing book, written by a former Senior Trial Attorney for the US turned Department of Justice turned CEO of IJM. I firmly believe that Christians should be at the forefront of the fight against injustice, and this book tells story after story of heartbreak, unwavering faith, grace and love.

4. Study all the football league 101s

Even though the World Cup is over, football still has a stronghold on my heart, and I have to familiarize myself with Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, heck, even MLS! The only problem now is where to watch the games, since sports cable channels only show Premier League games.

5. Learn to cook sinigang, niliga, tinola

It’s about time that I personally cook my 3 favorite Tagalog dishes. Let’s just hope I don’t torture my housemates with my “experiments”. Or I don’t burn our apartment down. Or I actually push through with this and not just continue buying fastfood or carinderia food

100 Things I Love Project: #2 – Football

Well duh

If you are in my social network, chances are you’ve seen my gazillion a day statuses about football, Nando, Spain, Fernando Torres, World Cup, Fern. You see where I’m going.

And even though I have a few friends (with emphasis on the few. I count maybe 8 or 10) who understand my fascination with the sport. Most react with “that’s boring” or “gwapo lang mga players” or “basketball na lang”

But I believe my love affair with football is just starting to take off and will continue for the rest of my life (and 80% of the world agrees with me)

Okay, I have to admit that I initially got hooked on the sport because of the hot men (if you’re a female with a pulse, you would of course). And I have to admit that until now, I can be such a girl about them

But along the way, I just fell in love with the beauty of the sport and the players who run a 120 meter field for 45 minutes straight per half, without so much as a water or bathroom or breathing break

I love seeing the passes and the sneak attacks and the aggressive defending and the amazing last-minute saves and the incredible footwork and the breathtaking speed

And yes, goals are very few and far between, but that just means that each goal is a cause for the ultimate celebration. Each goal is just so worth it.

And I also love the obsessive nature of the sport, with fans going to great lengths to support their favorite players, countries and clubs. That they would do/say/post anything for their faves is a testament to how gripping the sport (and yes, the behind-the-scenes drama) is.

And the men. Okay, don’t get me started on the men. Just a few words. Nando. Kaka. Almost the whole Spanish team. Messi. Mueller. Gerrard. Bocanegra. Gourcuff. Higuain. Santa Cruz. Okay, enough drooling now

After this World Cup, the next step for me is learn the game more. Oh, and yeah, pick a club. My friends have been convincing me to go with ManU or Arsenal or Barca or Inter. And because I’ve fallen head over heels in love with Spain, I’d probably go for Barca and Liverpool (only for Nando and Iker).

And I don’t care if you follow the sport because of the guys or because everyone you know is following it, as long as there are more Filipinos who love the game, I’m happy

Te amo futbal!!!

Vamonos La Furia Roja
