Music Monday: Anberlin (Post-Concert Hangover)

WHO: Anberlin is a Florida-based alternative rock band consisting of lead vocalist Stephen Christian, bassist Deon Rexroat, lead guitarist Joseph Milligan, drummer Nathan Young and rhythm guitarist Christian McAlhaney. While most of the members are Christians, they don’t consider themselves a Christian band, for reasons that they don’t want their reach to be limited by labels.

SOUNDS LIKE: Emery, Relient K, a louder Switchfoot

WHY I LOVE THEM: They make heartbreak sound so cool.

“And I finally found that life goes on without you. And the world still turns when you’re not around”

They’re one of the very few select bands that made a song that turned me into mush and made me wish I was actually in love just to be able to relate to the song.

“I wanna be the last first kiss that you’ll ever have”

And lately, they make cool, trippy music videos

TRIVIA: Vocalist Stephen Christian has Attention Deficit Disorder (as per his interview with DJ Roanna in Jam 88.3 last week) and he’s not ashamed of it and it fact uses it to fuel his creativity

SOCIAL NETWORKS: Facebook and Twitter of course

I WILL NEVER FORGET: Seeing them live last March 9! I was so excited that I bought my tickets way back in December. And even though the sound system sucked (or it may be the acoustics of A-Venue), I still had the time of my life singing along to their songs. Appreciated also that they sang some songs from their earlier albums. It was one whole videoke session with Anberlin for most of the people there

So near…yet so far…but still epic

Eleven Songs That Defined 2009 for Me

In no particular order….

“Breaking” – Anberlin – this song is for all those who broke hearts all over the place. You know who you are. I wish that 2010 will be the year of turning your life around so that no more girls (or boys, to be fair) will cry because of you

You make breaking hearts look so easy
Seems like you’ve done this before
You’ve got breaking hearts all but down
And you’ve done this, you’ve done this before

“Use Somebody” – both the original by Kings of Leon and the cover by Brooke White. This is one of those songs that I wish I could have written

I’ve been roaming around, I was looking down at all I see
Painted faces fill the places I can’t reach
You know that I could use somebody

“Stillness is the Move” – Dirty Projectors – It’s at the top of most critics’ year end lists and 10 seconds into the song, I understood why

after all that we’ve been through
i know we’ll make it after the wait
the question is a truth
there is nothing we can’t do
i’ll see you along the way baby
the stillness is the move

“Live Like We’re Dying” – Kris Allen – Even though Adam has been getting all the attention (and the sales), Kris is still my American Idol

and we’re all staring down the barrel of a gun
so if your life flashed before you
what would you wish you would’ve done

“Heartbreak Warfare” – John Mayer – His newest album was long overdue, and he didn’t disappoint, with songs like this one that was ripped from emo people’s diaries

Drop his name
Push it in and twist the knife again
Watch my face
As I pretend to feel no pain

“Magnificent” – U2 – Need I say more? No matter what album they release, fan or critics favorite or both, I still love. And this song was my favorite from No Line on the Horizon

I was born, I was born to sing for you
I didn’t have a choice but to lift you up
And sing whatever song you wanted me to
I give you back my voice from the womb
My first cry, it was a joyful noise

500 Days of Summer Soundtrack – okay, this is cheating of course, but the whole album was just, for lack of a better word, awesome; the perfect musical accompaniment for the perfect 2009 movie. She & Him’s Why Do You Let Me Stay Here stands out

Why don’t you sit right down and make me smile?
You make me feel like I am just a child
Why do you edit?
Just give me credit
I’m just sitting on the shelf

“If You’re Wondering If I Want You To” – Weezer – Geek rock will forever rule! I dare you to not bob your head while listening to this song

So much pain may come my way,
There may come a day when we have nothing left to say!
When the conversation stops,
And we’re facing our defeat.
I’ll be next to you,
And you’ll be right there next to me.

“I And Love And You” – The Avett Brothers – The melody, the voice, the lyrics, are all very simple. But something about the song strikes a chord in me. Maybe because those three words haven’t left my lips in such a long time…

Dumbed down and numbed by time and age
Your dreams to catch the world, the cage
The highway sets the travelers stage
All exits look the same
Three words that became hard to say
I and love and you

“Fireflies” – Owl City – Even my former officemate’s 7 year old daughter was captivated by this song. And I wouldn’t mind having all the toys in the music video too. The perfect song for Insomniacs like me

I’d like to make myself believe
That planet Earth turns slowly
It’s hard to say that I’d rather stay
Awake when I’m asleep
‘Cause everything is never as it seems

All the Songs from Glee – Again, cheating. But it’s hard to choose from among many gems from my favorite new show of 2009. They made uncool songs pleasant to the ears, and some, even more awesome than the original. April seems so far away…

What were your favorite songs from 2009?

The Soundtrack of My Life (as of this year)

Since I turned 30 a few days ago, I thought it fitting to come up with a new soundtrack, since the last one I did 3 or 4 years ago seems outdated (and my life was so drastically different then). So here goes….

“Love Will Come to You” by Indigo Girls

And I wish her insight to battle loves blindness
Strength from the milk of human kindness
A safe place for all the pieces that scattered
Learn to pretend theres more than love that matters

Ailene will always be precious to me, for a lot of reasons (naks) and one of them is because of this song. At the height of the great depression, she sent me this beauty of a song, and it helped me understand that truly inexplicable emotion called love. And now, I sing this to all friends who have had their hearts broken. Always, with a catch in my throat

“Me” by Paula Cole

And it is me who is my enemy
Me who beats me up
Me who makes the monsters
Me who strips my confidence

Whenever I feel my confidence erroding, I always turn back to this song and try to remember who the real enemy is. You should meet the “me”, more than 5 years ago; self-loathing, immature, always insecure, self-doubting me. She sometimes still rears her ugly head, but I would like to believe I got rid of most of her sometime back

“The World is Our Playground” by Up Dharma Down

I swear I belong
This is where I belong

Enough said

“Lost” by Coldplay

Just because I’m losing
Doesn’t mean I’m lost
Doesn’t mean I’ll stop
Doesn’t mean I would cross

For those who believe I’m lost…refer to my previous post, and that is all I’m saying about the subject

“Orange Sky” by Alexi Murdoch

When I am alone
When I’ve thrown off the weight of this crazy stone
When I’ve lost all care for the things I own
That’s when I miss you
You who are my home
And here is what I know now
Goes like this
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love

This is my love song for my Lola, my Mom, my Brother, my friends who know me inside and out and who accept me (as cliche as it sounds) for who I am

“Naive Orleans” by Anberlin

And I finally found that life goes on without you
And my world still turns when you’re not around

This is my song for all the men (boys) who have intentionally and unintentionally broken my heart. It took almost half a lifetime of learning (and I’m still learning in some ways) but I think I finally got it

“Grace” by U2

What once was hurt
What once was friction
What left a mark
No longer stings
Because grace makes beauty
Out of ugly things

No matter what my personal convictions are now, I still believe in grace, a thought that practically changed the world as we know it. And this song, for me, encapsulates this, in the simplest words I know

“Quiet Little Place” by K’s Choice

And now everything I feel
Whether it’s fiction or it’s real
It’s so much clearer
Like the color of this light
It seems more dangerous and bright
But I don’t fear her

For the past 3 or 4 years, my life changed drastically, and as I said before, from my own perspective, I’ve become a much better person because of this. It’s not like a major overhaul of my life, but a slow, subtle, shift in perspective and direction. I know I am still a work in progress, but for the first time in my existence, I am not afraid of where it will take me, be it back to where I came from (I am still very much open to that) or somewhere totally new (and I am not scared to death of that)

And on that note, I would like to thank my facebook friends for the gazillion greetings, my M2comms family for the “surprise” party last Friday and my real family, for the simple but meaningful day I got to spend with them. I did not celebrate my 30th with a bang, but I know this year is gonna be a blast

*as always, no real camera on my birthday, so let’s just settle for this
